Friends group welcomes Library Week

Stirling Road Branch marks national celebration

The Friends of the Stirling Road Branch Library are putting on a shindig to celebrate National Library Week, and the community is invited.
“We want people to come by and get a taste of what our library is like,” said Hannah Hostyk, co-president of the Friends group. Those who already appreciate the library can “find ways to get more involved.”
The free event offers giveaways, refreshments and activities for all ages from 4 to 6 p.m. April14 at the Stirling Road Library in Hollywood.
“We’re trying to make it into a festive, two-hour event,” Hostyk said.
Each child up to age 15 will be treated to a Scholastic book and a raffle ticket for a chance to win an Amazon gift card.
Anyone older than 9 years can take a juggling lesson at 5 p.m. taught by Roni Lynn, a popular local performer.
At 5:30 p.m. a dulcimer concert will showcase the branch’s upcoming folk music series which begins May 10. In partnership with the Music Club of Hollywood, music authority Michael Stock of WLRN National Public Radio will lead four monthly lectures.
Beverages and cookies will be served and balloons will be handed out. Volunteers will lead tours and help newcomers sign up for library cards.
“A lot people don’t understand the services a library offers. Computers and free Wi-Fi are always available,” Hosytk said. “It could be helpful to so many families if they knew that existed. We’re using this as fun introduction to the library.”
Hollywood Commissioner Richard Blattner and State Sen. Eleanor Sobel will address the crowd and present the city’s proclamation for National Library Week.
Observed April 13 to 19, the American Library Association launched National Library Week in 1958 by to promote library use and support, said Catherine McElrath of the Broward County Library.
“A library needs advocates and people who will help us think outside the box and transition into the 21st century,” Hostyk said. “We’re always looking for people who want to contribute ideas.”
